Japan Design Committee is pleased to present the 793rd Design Gallery 1953 exhibition, “Kaare Klint -Archetype of Danish Furniture Design.”
Kaare Klint was a pioneer who revolutionized Danish modern furniture design in the early 20th century. His simple and functional design philosophy continues to influence designers to this day.
This exhibition highlights Klint’s legacy as the founder of Danish modern furniture design, showcasing his achievements and design ethos. Featured pieces include the English Chair, reissued in 2024, the Faaborg Chair, and other iconic works that exemplify his timeless approach to design.
Also on display is “THE LAB” by Carl Hansen & Søn—a unique apprenticeship workshop system dedicated to cultivating exceptional furniture artisans, reflecting Klint’s enduring influence on craftsmanship.
We invite you to explore how Klint’s devoted students have inherited and evolved his philosophy, bridging the past, present, and future of Danish modern furniture design.

Message from Gen Suzuki, Exhibition Derector

Kaare Klint drew deeply from tradition, continually refining his forms in response to the changing needs of daily life and the human body. His precise and inquisitive approach laid the foundation for Danish modern furniture, nurturing a rich design culture alongside the many successors who followed in his footsteps. Balancing rationality with craftsmanship, and tradition with innovation, Klint’s philosophy continues to inspire new generations of makers today.
