It makes the tedious process of "doing" or "squishing" more enjoyable. There is a sense of trust in the heavy weight. As I grind the peppercorns, I interact with the rugged lump of iron, and as I mix the herbs, I enjoy the aroma. It is important to live a life that requires a little effort. This is the granddaddy of design.
